Snow Day Wellness: How to Protect Your Body This Morning!

There’s something special about the first real snowfall. You look outside and suddenly the whole neighborhood is alive! All the neighbors are bundled up with shovels in hand, snowblowers roaring back to life, kids running out the door with sleds they haven’t touched since last winter and there is always one who is starting to roll a ball of snow either to bring Frosty to life or start the first snowball fight. It’s fun, nostalgic, and a little chaotic in that classic Midwest way.

But while the excitement kicks in fast, our bodies… don’t always get the memo. Before you jump into clearing the driveway or dragging a sled up the hill, it’s worth giving your body a small head start. Nothing dramatic, just a few minutes to wake everything up. A little marching in place, some gentle twists, a couple shoulder rolls or mini squats. Cold muscles tighten quickly, and that’s when strains sneak in.
Here’s the part most people forget on days like this: hydrating. Just because it’s twenty degrees and you can see your breath doesn’t mean your body isn’t working hard. A few sips of water before you head out followed up by little more when you come back in helps keep everything running smoothly. Even a pinch of salt or low-sugar electrolyte mix can go a long way after an hour of shoveling or chasing kids around in the snow.
Bone broth is one of the most overlooked ways to stay warm and hydrated on a day like today. When you’ve been outside shoveling, or chasing kids through the snow, your body loses more electrolytes than you think, especially sodium. Bone broth naturally replaces those minerals while giving you steady warmth that water alone just can’t offer. It’s easy on the stomach, comforting to sip, and gives your muscles a little extra support as they recover from the cold. It’s basically winter’s version of a hydration boost and a hug at the same time.

When you finally do grab that shovel, think “push the snow forward” instead of scooping and twisting. Your back will thank you tonight, and tomorrow morning even more. And if you’re going sledding, give yourself permission to stretch before you take off up that first hill. Those repeated climbs hit the hamstrings and glutes harder than we remember.
When it’s all done, the driveway cleared, the snow angels made, the dark chocolate hot cacao poured, give yourself permission to take two minutes to cool down. A simple forward fold, a chest stretch in the doorway, a gentle quad stretch. Just a quick reset so your body feels as good as the morning looks.
Today’s snowfall brings a lot of joy and a little work. Take care of the body you’re moving through it with. Your future self, the one trying to get out of bed tomorrow will appreciate it.
